A look back at the International Day for Victims of Enforced Disappearances - August 30, 2024
On August 30, 2024, FEMED (Euro-Mediterranean Federation against Enforced Disappearances) organized a series of events in Paris to mark the International Day for Victims of Enforced Disappearances. This day, commemorated throughout the world, is a reminder of the urgent need to combat this crime, which all too often goes unpunished, and to bring truth and justice to the families of the disappeared.
A symbolic gathering in Paris
On Friday August 30, a rally was held in Place de la République, bringing together human rights associations, victims' families, activists and officials. After a minute's silence in tribute to the missing, poignant speeches were given by representatives of the associations, including FEMED President Nassera Dutour. The families of the disappeared shared their personal stories, denouncing the repressive practices of the governments responsible and calling for justice.
A day of exchange and awareness
On Saturday August 31, the day was devoted to screenings of short documentaries on enforced disappearances, followed by debates and testimonies. Various Parisian collectives of families of the disappeared set up stands to raise public awareness of the realities of enforced disappearances in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Turkey and Morocco. Discussions provided a better understanding of the devastating impact of these human rights violations on communities, particularly on women, who are often left alone to shoulder family responsibilities and fight for the truth.
The day concluded with concerts and DJ sets by artists from the Mediterranean region. These moments of culture and sharing brought participants together in a spirit of solidarity and remembrance.
A reflection on enforced disappearances and international law
On Sunday September 1, a conference entitled "Enforced disappearances, from the failure of the rule of law to a crime against humanity" brought together human rights experts, jurists and representatives of international organizations. Speakers discussed how enforced disappearances constitute a serious violation of human rights, and stressed the need to strengthen international justice mechanisms, including the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The debates were enriched by a photographic exhibition illustrating the struggle of families to find their loved ones, and by round tables where participants were able to exchange views on the challenges ahead in the fight against this scourge.
A renewed commitment to justice
This series of events not only paid tribute to the victims of enforced disappearance, but also served as a reminder of the importance of continuing to fight against impunity. FEMED remains more determined than ever to support the families of the disappeared and to bring their voices to the international stage.
We would like to thank all the participants and partners who contributed to the success of these days of commemoration. Together, we will continue to demand Truth and Justice for all victims of enforced disappearance.
